Taitara Mahi - Building and Property Manager
Permanent Full-Time
We’re looking for an experienced and strategic Building and Property Manager to lead the stewardship of Hastings District Council’s public and commercial building portfolio.
This is a senior leadership role, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, with responsibility for asset owner oversight of community facilities, civic buildings, libraries, recreation assets, senior housing, operational buildings and commercial or mixed-use properties.
You’ll provide strategic leadership across asset management, lease and property management, capital investment and portfolio optimisation—ensuring Council’s building assets are safe, compliant, financially sustainable and aligned with service and community outcomes.
This role balances commercial discipline with strong public value, enabling sound decision-making for senior leadership and elected members while supporting long-term wellbeing for our district.
What you’ll be responsible for
In this role you will:
- Lead and support managers across building maintenance, asset planning and capital delivery
- Act as Council’s asset owner representative for buildings and property
- Provide senior oversight of commercial and community lease portfolios
- Drive robust asset management planning and investment strategies
- Provide clear advice on risk, service levels and investment trade-offs
- Build trusted relationships with iwi, tenants, community partners and elected members
- Champion continuous improvement, innovation and whole-of-organisation thinking
Ōu wheako – about you
To be successful in this role you will:
- Significant leadership experience, including leading other managers
- Strong experience in building asset management and/or property and lease portfolios
- A solid understanding of public sector asset stewardship and governance
- Experience advising senior leaders and elected members
- Financial and asset lifecycle literacy, with sound judgement and risk awareness
- Excellent relationship-building, communication and negotiation skills
- A collaborative leadership style aligned with our values
- A relevant tertiary qualification in asset management, property, facilities management, business, law or a related field is required.
