Hastings District Council’s Health, Safety and Wellbeing team plays an important role in helping keep our people, contractors, visitors and communities safe across the wide variety of work we do. From offices and community facilities to parks, pools, roads and operational sites, our team supports people working in a diverse range of environments and roles. We provide specialist advice and support, while also building capability across the organisation and helping our people confidently manage health and safety as part of everyday work.
We’re looking for a motivated and proactive Health, Safety & Wellbeing Coordinator to join our team. If you're ready to take the next step in your HSW career, this is an opportunity to build your experience while working alongside a knowledgeable and down-to-earth team.
In this hands-on role, you’ll work closely with managers, staff and contractors to support the day-to-day management of risk, encourage a positive safety culture, and provide practical training, coaching and advice. No two days will look the same – you could be supporting operators working with heavy machinery in our waste operations, animal control staff working with animals and the public, office-based teams, or regulatory staff carrying out inspections and processing consents. You’ll also get out on site to carry out audits and inspections, support incident investigations, review and improve procedures, and contribute to wider HSW initiatives across the organisation.
This role includes a rostered after-hours on-call requirement.
Ōu wheako – about you
To be successful in this role, you will bring:

- 2 years or more relevant experience in a similar H&S role
- Great communication skills and the confidence to influence and engage with others
- A solid understanding of risk management processes, audits, investigations, and reporting
- A practical, hands-on mindset with a genuine commitment to health, safety and wellbeing
