Permanent, full-time

As a Council, with the support of tangata whenua and our wider community, Hastings District Council are responsible for the management of three quite different but closely related water systems: drinking water, stormwater and wastewater (sewerage).

We are looking for a Water Operator who will provide expert operational support to our 3 Waters team.

As part of the 3 Waters team within the Asset Management Group at Hastings District Council, you will be an integral part of ensuring the community has access to safe and reliable water. This Water Operator role is critical to the day-to-day operation and maintenance of the Council’s water supply systems. You will work closely with a supportive team under the guidance of the Senior Water Operator to ensure our water treatment plants operate effectively and safely in line with the Water Safety Plans and Drinking Water Standards for New Zealand.

By maintaining water quality, system performance, and responding promptly to operational issues, you will contribute to ensuring the health and wellbeing of our community. This is an exciting opportunity to develop your technical skills and make a real difference in a region that values its water as a precious resource.

Ōu wheako – About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • A recognised industry qualification (e.g., National Diploma in Drinking Water – Water Treatment, Site Technician) or be working towards this.
  • Experience in operating and maintaining public water supply systems, including water treatment plants, reservoirs, and reticulation networks.
  • An understanding of Drinking Water Standards, Water Safety Plans, and public health requirements.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and within a team.
  • Effective communication skills and the ability to interact with internal teams, contractors, and the public.
  • A proactive and safety-conscious approach to work.

Situated in the heart of Ngāti Kahungunu, the Hastings district and Hawke’s Bay offer an enjoyable environment in which to live, work and play. Our team is passionate about providing safe and reliable water services to our community, and we would love for you to join us in this important work.
